After a two year and $400 million renovation, The Plaza Hotel is now open. Prices are along the lines of "If you have to ask,.. though through April 1 there is a buy two get one free special on rooms." Opulent, excessive, luxurious,... Oddly, the place has lost its vitality and grace--it is hauntingly quiet, the doormen fail to open doors, and the Oak Bar is closed until 5:30 - and on a recent visit kept would be merry-makers in the hallway till 6:00.

A grand and well-located hotel for those who adore shopping, The Carlyle also excels for those who adore service. With 400 full-time staff for just over 180 rooms, you can have someone attending to specific culinary desires while your small dog is walked in nearby Central Park and your bags unpacked from a long day's stroll up and down Madison Avenue. Not surprisingly, there is a spacious fitness center and spa with personal trainers and masseurs on demand. And if you fall in love with the city, and this level of service, cooperative apartments are available.
