Between Patience and Fortitude--the two stone lions flanking the steps in "cobra" positions--is one of the city's greatest buildings, and one of America's greatest treasures, the New York Public Library. It houses the second largest collection of books in the U.S. The public is invited to request a book from its basement storage (there is no browsing at this library) and read it in the great reading room, among scholars and more woebegone visitors.
